Socrates Eleftheriades (Class of 1930), a prewar librarian at Anatolia College, played a pivotal role in rescuing the College’s library collection. Following the departure of the Germans, he meticulously cataloged the scattered remains – some eight thousand volumes – that friends of the College had managed to save. His dedication extended beyond this initial effort, and his studies in the United States led to his appointment as an assistant professor.
In 1954, after warnings prompted by his dentist brother’s charges of pro-Communist leanings, Socrates emigrated to California. There, he continued his successful career in librarianship.
His enduring love for Anatolia College is a lasting legacy. The High School Library, named in his honor, recognizes the significant financial contribution he made with his wife, Olga Mavrophidou, a former teacher of Greek at Anatolia College.
