Charles Tracy moved the seminary of Constantinople to Merzifon in 1880, establishing a new school. He was a man well versed in hard work, having grown up on a farm before becoming a teacher. That is why he wanted his students to learn to use their hands, in addition to sharpening their minds. Together with others, he built Anatolia College from the ground up. A school that started as a seminary but eventually grew to include a hospital, a school of nursing, the only school in the Ottoman Empire for deaf children, an orphanage, a printing press which published Merzifon’s first newspaper, a carpentry shop, a flour mill, and a museum. In 1886 Charles Tracy became the first President of Anatolia College.
