In 1915, Miss Frances Gage, a teacher at the Girls’ School, insisted on accompanying the girls alongside Charlotte Willard, when Turkish soldiers came for the Armenian girl students and forced them into carts to take them into the countryside. The two women stayed with their students for weeks under terrible conditions until finally the government sent an order to return them to the school. The bravery they displayed saved the girls. Miss Gage died two years later, on July 15th, 1917 and was buried near the Girls’ School in the mission compound at Marsovan.
