Emerson, originally a secretary of ABCFM, was the first female trustee of Anatolia College. In 1922, thanks to an amendment to Anatolia&#8217;s constitution, the Board of Trustees became formally independent from ABCFM, and the school ceased to be, in the strict sense, a missionary institution. The same amendment authorized the College to extend its educational services to young women. Agreeing with these measures, the trustees also approved the appointment of a lady to their Board in Boston, with the prospect that others would follow.
